What is horror?

Sounds pretty simple, asking people what horror is? But its actually not...

Horror films are movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear, horror and terror from viewers. Their plots frequently involve themes of death, the supernatural or mental illness. They deal with our most primal nature and its fears: our nightmares, our vulnerability, our alienation, our revulsions, our terror of the unknown, our fear of death and dismemberment, loss of identity, or fear of sexuality.

In horror movies, a great deal of suspense will be used to help build up in the audiences minds. They are usually related or set in everyday situations, so the audience are able to relate it to themselves.

Another good example of horror, is by using a set range of charactors in the set, for example, clowns, most people are now scared of clowns, as they are seen as scary pervy men dressed in costumes. Another example of horror charactors are children, as the idea of the child having more power over all the charactors acting like adults can create a scary vibe.

What is a thriller?

Okay, here it goes

A thriller can be difined by the mood it gives to the audience, for example, if it makes you excited.. or it gives you thrills, then its a thriller, just like in a horror film, if it makes you scared, then its a horror!

Most people find thrillers enjoyable, as it gives the feeling of excitement ,this is done by the genre in the films. This genre is incredibly large, and thrillers often overlap with pieces of work produced in other genres; mysteries, for example, are often thrillers.

Several characteristics help to define a thriller. Thrillers typically involve sudden plot twists and lots of red herrings, for example, keeping people unsure about what is going to happen. This suspense can get almost unbearable, especially in a long piece or a television series. Thrillers also have a lot of action, which is often chaotic, and they typically feature resourceful heroes and exotic settings.

Acount of editing preliminary task

So in this task we had to edit our film, we did this by using final cut pro which is a software package run on G5 macs, it is a non linear editing package which is timeline based. Before this though, we had to learn about the software before I used to, some of which was, it is a safe and reliable way of not losing work, as it is a system which allows your prodject to be checked 'out' & 'in' to a seperate server. After this, we then logged our rushes(filmed material) which was done by selecting the best shots and takes into a 'logged bin' which is selected the best by making an 'in' point and 'out' point. After this we placed the shots chronologically on a timeline then trim and cut them to create the illusion of a simulataneous event. This is all we got up to in the lesson, however next lesson we will be adding the sound and then moving onto creating the special effects.

Shooting the preliminary task

Last friday, in a group of four we filmed our preliminary task sequence in the tv suite, this location was brilliant, we got to shoot here as we won the filming task which involved following a storyboard of a conversatrion between two people insuring that we followed technical conventions such as -, it was in focus, we didnt break the 180 degree rule, was the shot type correct, good continuity, was everyone following there certain jobs, did we use the appropriate terminology to make sure everyone on set knew what was happening,'stand by etc'? etc. From what we have seen so far, it went really well, the actors were really good, and the filming was done correctly, however we did make a few mistakes at the start, but thats what we learnt from, so we only made a couple of mistakes, such as filming over another sequence which wasnt very good, but we soon learnt not to do it again. My specific job was on lighting, I had to decide at which times the lighting changed which was really effective as it could change the setting of the scence, eg morning, evening, afternoon. So after all of this, it gave us experience of shooting in a proper studio which give it a special feel to it. I have learnt so much from all of this, and feel it has benifitted me so much more actually using the cameras in action, rather than just looking and learning about them, therefore I now know how to put the correct settings on the camera, how to shoot at the right angles, and which directions to shout out. This was so far the best task we have done and I cant wait to edit it and see how it turns out!

see youu

So far in Media

Hi guys,

So basically, this is just a little note on telling you the things we have got upto in our media class so far, its been pretty busy, these are some of the practicals we have got upto, and what we will be doing in the next week, all very exciting, enjoy:)

Okay, so far we have covered quite alot, for example in the first week, we did a practical on a filming an interview for a tv programme, we learnt how to use the cameras, and which direction to use them and lighting adjustments, this exercise was like an introduction to our media class, it also helped us bond as a class which was very positive.

Secondly, we had to go out of the classroom, and take photos in little groups, of different camera shots, for example, mid shots, close ups, wide shots, varies of different shots, we didnt know this at the time, but it built up to be helpfull for our prep that week. Also gave us the chance to experiment with the cameras and different types of shots.

Thirdly, we had a lesson on how to use the cameras, and how to put them together and to use the correct camera settings, this lesson was probably one of the most important ones as if we didnt know how to use a camera then the whole next few weeks would turn into a disaster as we wouldnt know what to do, this was building up for the film clip which we will be filming sometime this week. It was really helpfull, now i know how to use the camera and put it together without breaking it! :)

Also, we got taken into the computer suite, and got taught how to use photoshop-wow its amazing, you can edit yourself and make it look amazing, soso good. That evening we got set a prep on making a horror poster but we had to use our own photos and use photoshop, it was a bit tricky at first, but i soon got used to it and now have it installed on my own laptop!

Further more, we had to do a little mini film clip in groups, which was going to be assessed, I was in a group of 3, we had to remember how to use the cameras, how to put them together, and which settings to put them in, which of course wasnt a problem-duhhh!:) we filmed someone walking down the stairs and getting a drink, however we did it from different angles, close ups, midshots, tracking high, low. It went really well, and we won the task and now get to do the real film clip in the video studio which is amazing and I cant waitttttttttt!

So the next task, as I mentioned is to film a clip in the tv studio, which is super exciting, ill let you know how it goes!

Catch ya later xx

Blade poster

Another prep we had to do was to create a blade poster, by using different slogans, images, and titles. In mine I used photoshop, which helped me create a more scary looking poster, rather than a dull and boring one made on microsoft word. I used the scary looking colours, to create a dark and vibrant atmosphere in the poster, and give the target audience something good to look at. In the end my poster looked really scary by using photoshop, without this it would have looked very boring!

For prep, we had to create a horror poster, in order to do this we had to use photoshop, this helps us to make horror things become more realistic and real. By having a good horror poster, it will be will a succesfull type of advertising, and make people want to watch the film. To make a good horror themed poster, i used lots of dark groosome colours, there is a tool on photoshop called the liquify tool, which stretches and moves the bits of the picture that u want. I used this alot in my poster, I made the boys ears big, his nose big, finer nails.... without this, the poster would look like an ordinary boy, who doesnt even look scary. This is why photoshop is an essential tool in the media industry right now, for good advertisment and entertainment.

Catchyahlaterrrrr:)

Basicly , this is me and my brother in spain, its a wide shot of our bodies, even if we do look a bit strange. Its shot at a low angle, which for this doesnt make it a very good photo
